currently sticking to a potted tank idea for my plants.. think it'll reduce any substrate allelopathic hostilities.(after reading diana walstad...) easier to rescape as well. Ive just gotten some zeolite frm some 2nd hand filter. are these "rechargeable"? i know zeolite's used to absorb ammonia, but can it release it when levels get low? Can it absorb anything else? will bacteria be able to colonise it? I plan to mix at the bottom of the pot these materials:
    1.peat
    2.clay(laterite or vermiculite)
3.mulm or some other base fert
    4.n zeolite, of course
and topped with a layer of gravel 2-3mm.

Im doing this coz i want to hold the nutirents tight n exchangable. Is it viable? Shd the substrate in the [pot be slightly areobic or anareobic? Any suggestions?

I am not sure if Zeolite can release the ammonia when levels get low. But when fresh, this compound absorbs all the ammonia that the plants don't have N available for growth.

I once used it in my filter thinking it was some kind of good filter material for bacteria colonising. My plants turned yellow after 2 weeks.

zeolite releases the adsorbed ammonia in contact with salt water.

i see... so: zeolite has a permanent uptake that will not release the ammonium until a reaction with ionic NaCl? I had the idea that zeolite has a high CEC and guessed that it would release NH4 to reach an equilibrium... at least thats what i interpreted from Dr Mallick...
In other words, it isnt advisable to add zeolite to base substrate?
