I recently got some moss from the hills in Lake Toba in North Sumatra.

I am new to mosses and would really like to find out what mosses are these.

The first one is rather large. The specimen in then second picture is beautiful and seems to do well submerged.

I will post photos of a few more odd looking specimens, some looking like branching corals.

Here's another interesting moss. Its has a simple dichotomous branching form making it look like antlers. Only the growing tips are green while the rest of it is brown.

There is a smaller moss with similar coloration but a more Christmas tree like branching just next to it.

The third one is hard to see. Its also of the same colouration but it is much thinner and branches like coral instead.

I should have taken photos of them before I tied them up.

Maybe when they grow a little it will be easier to get a good photo of them.

Would appreciate anyone can help ID them.

The moss on the right was found in a vegetable patch, exposed to strong sunlight. What caught my eye was the very neat growth habbit. It looked like thick carpet and was silvery in colour. Looking closely, each strand looks like braided thread.

Once under water, it started to take on a uniform light green color and spread a little but still maintaining its single strand erect form.

I think the silvery colour is an adaptation to reflect excessive light.

Its been sitting flat on the tank floor for almost a week. Then I tied it upright so that its more closer to its original orientation.

It is very beautiful. It looks non the worse for wear. I hope it grows. If you look at it closely, it looks like fireworks.

I do believe that the large moss in your first picture is Sphagnum.
