Hi Heuer, you can just tell Teo hairgrass those short ones will do. That's what I tell too. Very friendly and helpful lot of people there.

remember, use a pincer, grip a small clump of plants (about 5 strands) at the root base, and shove it deep into the gravel (1-1½ inch deep), they're hardier than you think and it'll help them root deeply. don't clump them together it will invite BBA.

Hi Choy,
Thanks for the advice. i have been reading up on past threads on how to plant HG. will post again if i hit the wall.
Thanks to everyone advice.
Cheers!
Give plants 2-3 weeks to root, once they root, then they grow fast.
These plants invest a lot in the their roots, so you might not see much growth at first, but they will get going.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the advice. This will be my setup:
-2x36W PL light (will use only 1x36W for my 2x1x1 which gives me about 2.5W/Gal)
-CO2 injection to get 6.5ph with 4kH via baking soda
-Base fert - JBL aquasoil about 1"
-lone star about 2" front, 3" back
-photo period - 5hr per day for a week for the start and increase 1hr -every 3days to 9hr daily.
-no dosing for the first 2 weeks
-weekly dosing->2ml TMG 2x, 1/16 teaspoon of KNO3 2x per week,
1 rice grain of KH2PO4 2x per week
- 40% weekly water change
Plants: hairgrass, erect moss on driftwood, frogbits and maybe some HC using acrylic as partition to prevent "overflow".
Live stock: 2 oto, 5 yamato, 30 cardinals (only put in cardinals after 1 month of setup)
Do let me know if these steps are ok. any advice and comments are greatly welcome and appreciated.
Cheers!!
Heuer,
Do the 8-12 photoperiod as normal from the start...you do not need to shorten it.
Dose nutrients right from the start, do not wait. You might consider doing more water changes for the first few weeks to clean things up.
The routine sounds about right...just make sure you keep up on the CO2 and do 50% water changes instead of 40%.
Personally, I would only go with 5-10 cardinals for such a small tank. The algae crew sounds good. It is best to keep a low-moderate bioload tank than a high one.

Peter Gwee
Hi Peter,
will having the 8-10 hr photoperiod and dosing right from the start cause algae problem as the plants are not settled in yet to suck up the nutrients.
please advice.
Cheers!
I agree with Peter, I see no reason why you should increase the photoperiod incrementally. And also, I don't see why you should hold back your dosing.
dude, do plant them in small bunches of less than 10 plantlets as suggested abv. i jus did up one tank of HG, and being impatient , i planted them too big a bunch. i'm not struggling with bba...looks real ugly now cos i've given them 2 trims till date. almost botak now.
jus my 2cts worth.
regards
alan
