    Hmm. was wondering if I could attach an old 12V PC fan i have to an iron core light ballast. If the ballast could support the additional load, would it be OK?

    Also, i think that the iron core ballst on the market for PL lights are actually a stripped down DC adaptor rite?

    nope.
    your fan will get 'fried' if you connect a pc fan to a iron core ballast.
    the iron core ballast will generate a high voltage of a few hundred volts to run a pl tube.
