DD will blacken at the base with the eventual result fitting your description if the lighting is not sufficient at the base. That's my experience.

However in the old AQ forum there used to be a discussion on how injection of N and P into the substrate can somewhat reduce the leggy effect of plants such as L. brevipes or arcuata. I do not know if DD will behave the same under the same treatment.

P.S. Why was L. brevipes mentioned in the subject title when you did not talk about this plant?

We had no NP added to the substrate and it does great. Both plants.
Add CO2, SeaChem Equilibrium GH to 5 or so.
If the stems are brittle, then you need to give it room and plenty of CO2 and NO3.
We used plain flourite, a tad of peat.

Both plants are fairly easy to grow otherwise.
