Sounds interesting, any comparo bet T8, T5 and PL in terms of efficiency, output, lifespan, cost, etc? PL is really a bent T4 tube right?

I'm definitely switching (in fact, in the process of switching). For my 4ft tank, if I were to use PL lights, one of the problems I faced is the 'dark spot' in the tank caused by the insufficient coverage of lights (cos of the length of the tubes). For a 4ft T5 it is 54W and so 2 of such tubes would be sufficient for my low light tank when the current 2x30W FL seemed a little weak. Also the current FL does not cover the 2 sides of the tank and so plants are not doing too well then.

Orgas, what's the brand of T5 tube you be selling? Will it be HO ones? I'll want to change to T5 too!

The straight forward answer is 'Yes'. At least Osram has the ballast specifically for T5 4ft. I believe Osram also produce the T5-ballast for the rest of the size of T5 tubes they produce.

Apparently there's two types of T5 tubes right? The normal ones and the High Output types.

The normal ones already selling in shops like C328 for a very reasonable price. Edge to edge coverage and hidden ballast.

    Cheers,

The normal T5 is cheap but the HO version is expensive especially the eballast. From what I gathered. 2 feet HO T5 tube goes for $9 and the ballast goes for around $40+. How much would a 4 feet cost?!!??!!!

What's the lifespan of a T5-NO and a T5-HO? Same as normal FLs?

As far as I understood, it follows the PL light change should be done yearly. But T5 is usually used for Marines and it is usually about 8000K and above. Most marine aquarist prefers to change it every 6 mths.

Osram markets 6000K T5 HO tubes.

A shop in Sim Lim sells Osram 4ft T5 HO tube (6000K) for $13.
The Osram Ballast that drives 2x54W T5 is priced at $60.

I do have T5 e-ballast from Elbiru. Price is lower than Osram. As for T5 6500K tubes, good news is on the way with varies wattages. 24W, 39W and 54W.

I have also the retrofit T5. Let me know if you are interested.

    Ok
I am currenly setting up 2 T5 hoods (I have all the materials for them here) for 2 different tanks one 70 cm long, one 150 cm long, the small one will have 4x54 cm lamps I think this are 28w and the long one 6x146 cm 80w lamps all the lamps are osram HO 6.500 K they are driven from dimmable ballasts 1-10v. The small tank (1 dimmable ballast for every 2 lamps), and 6 dimmable ballasts 80w each the big one (there are no 2x80w lamps on one ballast yet, Osrams catalog in it's site says there are and I tried to order them but they answered that they still have problems driving 2x80 w lamps on one ballast so I had to get 6 ballasts). The ballasts in each of the 2 tanks are driven each from a programmable eprom dimmer through USB by windows software full sunshine - sunset can be achieved or whatever other combination is required there is also a high quality digital timmer within the hood to start the on-off state of the dimmers-bulbs. In all the materials for this 2 hoods costed me 800 euros, including the 2 dimmers that went for 100 euros each including shipping, and excluding plywood and such materials related to the hood construction.
    Just for your info

    Hi,

    Just change my set from 4ft PL-4x 36W to 4ft T5-4x54.

too bright and i try to remove one tube. but i think the connection is done in series. Remove one, the other cannot light up (2 tube to one ballest).

maybe you won't have this problem with DIY unit.

Also, think there is interference btw my light (ballest) to other equipment (ph meter and thermometer).

after i on the light, the reading become unstable.
don't know will it help if i gnd my casing?

    And how much is a double-tube 3ft T5 39W with eballast?
Will be great if there pics (including closeup), cos some that I've seen are workable but not exactly wired with safety in mind
