Notice that the existing shrimp guard avaliable in the market are not really shrimplet safe. The one who are shrimplet safe breaks down easily and quite dangerous for fishes as they can get cut if they were to swim pass it. Using of filter sponge, you need to do periodic maintenance to prevent clogging.

Finally I went to look for very fine stainless steel mesh. Came across the stainless stell mesh of grade 304.

Did my own research on it and found that it is commonly used in making our fork and spoon and it is resistant to rush also. So I got some to try. Did a few type of pattern to fold the mesh so that there are not sharp edges around the guard. End up got most of my fingers cut when I do the bending.

Then put inside my nano tank to try. The guard is been in the tank for close to 4 months. It did not rust.

    Tada...!

Did a few more and put into my Cory tank and other 2 Sulawesi tank. Been running for close to 4 months. No rust found and they are practically zero maintenance.

Anyone wants to try? I still got a few to let go at a small token. Hehehe

Depends on what size of filter mesh you are looking into. 4-6 pieces per foot. The only I made is 4 pieces per foot.

    Re: DIY shrimp guard

By the way, I can let go a 30x30cm mesh at $10. Its grade is 304 stainless steel grade, not the 316 grade. Please go and read up the type of grade before you decide to buy. I would not entertain you once the mesh is sold to you. First come first serve.

I got excess 8 ready made shrimp guards to let go at $5 each.

Sorry mod for this. Please delete this thread if selling is not allow here. My apology.

Nice DIY, but then not worth the effort unless you're making it for odd sizes of intake. GC is selling these mesh inlet guards with wire mesh this fine, at a marginally more expensive price..

    Re: DIY shrimp guard

I understand GC selling similar size. As explain. If you happen to see the construction of GC fine shrimp guard. You might know what I mean. The rubber that they used to cover the edge of the mesh are used in the wrong application and it may not last. These are the main reason why I rather made my own than purchasing from GC.

Yes. I do customize for my own filter use. Be it for canister and HOF.

    Cheers.

I see where you're coming from now. Perhaps i could take a measurement of my inlet and let you know see if you could help to custom for me, dont mind paying as long as it lasts.
