You can buy peat from Green Chapter for a start. Think it's cocopeat. Certain NTUC fairprice outlets sell Jiffy peat pellets or Hortipeat. They are suitable for breeding killies as well.

No, compost is not peat. Compost is organic matter recycled to be used as fertilizer. You cannot simply use compost this way. The nutrients will pollute the water and kill the fishes. Even raw peat has to be boiled several times before it is safe to use.
Nothos cannot get pregnant, same for all killies. They are egg-laying tooth carps, not livebearing tooth carps, so the females can only be egg bound.

Never use compost to breed killies. Boiling doesn't work. Even if the fishes might be okay but the eggs would be killed in the compost when you store them later for incubation.
If you want to use medium other than peat, use sand but you'll have to sift the eggs to separate them from the sand and store the eggs in the peat after you collect them from the breeding tank.

I saw Polyart was selling peat moss for filters. I think that is probably suitable.
Most killies take time to get accustomed to a breeding bowl/container. Give them time and the male will happily dance over the breeding bowl to entice the female for spawning. Note, these nothos are plowers so you don't really need a deep bed of peat in the bowl. Compost is not suitable, due to the reasons already stated by Shi Xuan. If your fish are breeding in it now, there is no guarantee that the eggs will survive the incubation phase in the compost.
Fish.. Simply Irresistable
