If it is a man-made hybrid will it then assigned a scientific name?

BTW should this be posted under 'Freshwater Fauna'?

the Harlequin is Trigonostigma heteromorpha, no matter what variety you get. As far as I know, this is a melanistic form which has been propagated by some breeders...... I personally don't find it a great creation, considering the colours of wild fish.

I heard that it was dyed or injected. However, should it be a selective bred variety (note variety is not the same as hybrid) then it can be given a variety name (even man-made ones) so possibly Trigonostigma heteromorpha var. blue.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    alamak pretend you don't know

variety does not involve creating new genetic materials, all genes (long hair, short legs, red lips, blue arse) are all in the original gene pool of the species. we simply SELECT the individuals that exhibit the desirable traits (blue arse, e.g.) so that they have a higher chance of reproducing and thus passing on the genes.

hybrid is the creation of new species (e.g. mule = horse × donkey) in which new genetic materials are created. sometimes these occur in nature (e.g. mule) and sometimes people "encourages" it (e.g. LH and Parrotfish). the resultant offspring is neither a member of the father nor mother's species.
