I would like to get some feedback about this; using twigs i found from fallen branches instead of driftwood,

    I have collected some:

    And i even use it in a new setup nano tank;

I first boiled it before putting it in the tank. Wonder what would the implications to shrimps?

is the bark peeled off? is it hardwood or soft wood? do you know Which tree was it from? has it been thoroughly dried before boiling? if there's a 'no' in any answer, or softwood, I would suggest you take it out.

Re: Twigs instead of driftwood in aquarium

This is an interesting thread. I wanted to find out as well. I've been collecting bamboo sticks.

Im guessing if I follow frozenduck, I would need to boil, sun amd then dry them all together.

I've always wanted to know if we are able to use what nature has thrown into our aquarium. Would be good to find out if anyone else out there who has been doing that. I figure the filtration system must be at tip top condition in order to produce a feat like that.

Yes, you can use what nature has to offer, but certain wood actually release toxins or undesirable chemicals upon prolonged soaking, softwood, tends to breakdown too fast. barks not removed or not dried properly tend to have hitch hikers or unwanted pest. last but not least, when in doubt, Google is the answer. got my knowledge from there when I wanted to do something similar back then

In the case of unknown wood, i guess just have to try and see... maybe test for a few weeks in a spare/quarantine tank with less sensitive livestock to see if there is any ill effects, before adding into your main tank.

Generally if the twigs or wood are already dead and bone dry (not still "alive" and have sap leaking out when cut), then should usually be okay to put in an aquarium.

it look like branches from a rain tree.
If it is, it wont work.It a soft wood and it will rot.
Your water will turn yellow in 2 days.
For aquarium wood you need hard wood not soft.
It has to be treated (boiled) and dry to kill any parasite.
here is an example of a hand picked branch that have been boiled, sand and hand dried.

Wah, Zerofighter, where did u pick such a piece of nice branch from????

You know, prices of driftwood in Singapore are like gold. I don't know why such things can be so expensive when u just go and pick it up! So I want to go to the source rather than pay those prices in shops and limited selection.

In HCMC, they even give free to customers who bought things from shop!!! And if they sells, its only $3 per kg.

I believe he's trying to say Ho Chi Minh City, which is Vietnam.
Fish keeping is not a good hobby unless you received support from your family to keep them.

Re: Twigs instead of driftwood in aquarium

My old tank had a few twigs picked off the streets. All rotted away, so difficult to remove as they disintegrated as I tried to pull them out, sending black and brownish debris all over. That was it, no more twigs. I got lucky I think, did not affect my neons or shrimps, "they kept quiet mah".

But bamboo float king isn't it, like quite difficult to keep in place in a natural way. Poke deep into the substrate may can hold...

Yeah it is. Need to soak it for a very long time before it can sink just like bogwood.
