Your shrimps will be expensive food for rams.
Hi guys, just wanna get some consensus on whether I can include shrimps in my tank setup.
Its a 3ft low-tech planted tank with normal gravel (no aquasoil) and my plants are predominantly java moss and anubias.
I have 3 german blue rams (2female, 1male), 18 neons tetras and 9 3-line corys.
Was wondering if i could include shrimps to make the tank more lively

I am not PERFECT but I am LIMITED EDITION !!! BIG Tank comes with BIG Responsibility...as they makan a lot of $$....lol
sure you can, but they wont have the chance to even land on the gravel unless added in bulk, will get eaten.
ohh...so i guess i'll have to turn to other alternatives for my hair algae then?
amano shrimp would be your best bet. but like the others said.. the rams would most probably kill them amano shrimps too.. even though they are pretty large :/
Rams are still going to try and kill the amano shrimps. They'll probably bite off all the legs first, wait for the shrimp to die, then pull it apart into edible pieces.
I've seen a small balloon ram take apart one of my smaller amano before.
alright, thanks for all the help! its lucky that i didnt make a hasty purchase when i visit the LFS. I'll prob get some ottos to tackle the algae instead. shrimps will wait!
Hi all, apologize to ride on this thread. I too, would like to find out if it's possible to add Amano shrimp in my setup.
My tank is a 2 ft tank quite densely planted. Current tank inhabitants are:
9 Halequi Rasboras
1 Oto
1 SAE
1 Cardinal tetra
1 Ember tetra
Temperature with fan at 28-29 degrees celsius.
Thinking of adding 1-2 Amano shrimps. Will it be snack for any of my inhabitants? Is the temperature ok?
Sure u can.
But u probably won't see them much as they will be hiding from the sae and rams .
Even if the rams don't eat them , they will be pester to death IMO..maybe u can try dwarf crayfish.
They are larger
FAILURE IS THE MOTHER OF ALL SUCCESS
The Rams will harass the Amano Shrimps. The shrimps will end up hiding in one corner of the tank (assuming that there are hiding places the Rams can't get to) and stop performing cleaning duties around the tank.
Mixing shrimps and fishes together, there is always a risk of the fish trying its luck. Shrimps are also generally more sensitive to water parameters so you have to aclimatise it well using drip method or any method you prefer. Or else the shrimp might die before the fish have a chance at it.
Looking at your list of fishes, i will give it a try (i worry about the SAE thou). Of course, noone will guarantee for you.
My tank have tetras with shrimps too and they are still surviving for quite some time already.
Oh my tank is a room temperature tank only cooled by fan when the weather is hot.
