i wanna start a nano tank in my bedroom.. any hang on filter which are silent? will be better if its cheap as well!
Hmm.. I have a lot of colleagues using different kind of cheap small hanging filters in the office..most are silent all below $10.. BUT!! motor give way after 2-4 months.. choose a better one, $10 above.. hee.. I using slim type, power, silent and don't have to top up internal water whenever power up. Go Sea View still have 15% discount.. enjoy!
Gex brand of hang on filters are quite silent. Didn't hear any motor rattling sound or any other sound.

You might want to consider the exact size of the tank and then get a filter that is slightly overkill, so as not to under filter the tank. Most hang on filters are silent, the noise only comes when the filter starts getting choke with impurities, the motor will pump harder. The other thing to note is that the cheaper pumps still does its job, just that the life span will be shorter than the ones that cost more. Apart from the motors lasting longer, the ones that cost more will actually throw in better filter medias, thus having more efficency in filtration.

Gex slim, currently using. Very quiet but im changing to a bigger capacity gex slim filter as current one is too small.
Can also consider the ISTA "thin type" hang on filter... it has similiar design to the Gex slim filter, but the motor and impeller are outside of the tank (not inside), so less heat transfer into the water and no wire dangling into the water too.

I've been using the smallest 180 l/ph model for my 13 litre quarantine tank for the past few weeks. So far it runs quietly and works well.
Is the ISTA slim filter available in our LFS already?
Yup, i've spotted them at the various LFS like Polyart, C328, Seaview etc. I guess the other LFS might probably stock them too.
I recommend eheim liberty. They are very silent and I have use them for about a month. I can adjust the flow rate. The only downside is there is not much space to put your media in.
Hi, I will recommend GEX slim for its quietness. Like what many before me have recommend. So quiet you will not notice it is there. I personally have used it on my nano tank for 6 months.

Anyone knows what is inside the filter catridges of the Gex filter? Feels like some small stones.
Those are small bio media rocks or carbon inside the Gex filter cartridge.
Actually you can customize your own filter media in the Gex slim. This is what i usually do, I put those small pore sponge (those sponge from air driven sponge filter) at the inlet to act as mechanical and bio sponge, then the inside the filter is full of small bio medias like ceramic rings, seachem matrix or biohomme.
I think those are charcoal.

Correct term is activated carbon aka activated charcoal. It is stated on it packaging 活性碳.
