Hello....
C328 sell mollies in huge bags?....are you sure they are not feeder fishes....Ask the Aunty that you want to buy mollies the non feeder fish.
Hi
My kid brought back a bag of mollies and have been trying to keep them alive. But she brought back more males than females and the females keep dying.
I've looked at c328 but they only sell mollies in a huge bag which I don't have space to keep all of them.
Anyone have any ideas where I can just get a few females to replenish the harem?
Thks!

Thks David. I am a bit blur in this area. OK I will check again. I went to the other shop on the same block, not the auntie's. The Aunty's place, a few times I went but the folks there were not very friendly so i chickened out asking the question.
This again.
No problem klo44w
At C328, you have to be brazen and stop any shop assistant to help you....they are so busy that is why they look unfriendly....
How are you keeping your fish? What are the equipment that you are using? Do remember that 1cm of fish requires 3liters of water....if you do not follow this rule, then a larger filter and more frequent water changes are required.
I don't suppose this is a planted tank right?

Thiw is bare bones set up. Plastic tank, colorful gravel base, 1 hydrilla plant, some short pipes for them to hide (they still haven't figured that out yet), 1 hang on filter and 1 box filter. Water's quite clear and I suction the gravel 1x per week to clear the poop and other stuff.
I have one otto algae ester plus 1 suckered fish to try to eat up what "other stuff" in the tank where possible.
So in short, nothing as fancy as some of the other chaps here.
Thks!
Does not matter...the guideline still applies. You got a filter with filter wool in it? That is good as there is some media for the beneficial bacteria to grow on.
Try getting hornwort for your tank as this floating plant is very good at sucking up excess nutrients and give comfort to you mollies.
A good indicator is your nose. If the water smells more fishy then normal. Time to do a water change.

Yes, filters has filer wool plus some ceramic rings and carbon.
Will make an effort to go look for hornwort as per your suggestion and accost a shop assistant at C328 to catch and sell me a few female mollies!
I just saw a picture of hornwort. We got one, but the fish kept biting off the stem, so in the end, we got rid of it as it became botak already
Thank you very much for your guidance.
Hey klo44w
Its pretty normal for mollies to nip at hornwort as veggie is part of their diet. Hornwort are real inexpensive and if you do have your tank near a light source, they grow pretty fast.

I bought the horn wort and a bag of mollies (those meant to be feeder fish) figured that statistically I would be better off than buying those meant to be reared in the aquarium in the true sense.
I found that the fishes are hiding btw the horn wart plant.
Thks for all your advise. Let's see how long all the fishes survive my kids.
Hahaha...they will more or less survive. Use this opportunity to teach your kids simple science stuff...
Who knows...you kids may just turn out to be another Mr Amano of the future...

Is it normal that after introduction of the horn wort plant that the water becomes a bit murky or cloudy. The water a bit brownish, almost like if someone had dropped a few drops of chocolate milk into the water.
Any idea why us this?
Nope...not suppose to be like that. at the most it turns slightly greenish or slightly brownish...but the water should be clear. Could you post a picture up?

Sorry here is the visual condition of the water.
Any experts able to render advice?
Thks!

David pls refer to my latest post with pictures.
I think to further qualify, the filter wool looked dirty, almost reddish, which I attribute to the kids being over zealous in feeding the fishes. I've changed the filter wool and also cleaned up the ceramic rings and the carbon.
Still learning how to do things on the forum.
Ken
Looks like a bacteria bloom. Did you recently clean the filter (if there is one)? Do a 20 to 30 percent water change and do use anti-chlorine.

Haha I asked the auntie at c328 and she nodded her head when I asked if this was the horn wort.
I've cleaned up the filter, and also did some water change though not the 20 to 30% change. I will try that and see.
Thks!
When you clean the filter and change the wool, it's best to do it with tank water that you normally will throw away during water change. It's best to use an Anti-Chorine before replenishing the tank water.
As for the filter wool, always keep a small amount together with the new wool. In this way, you are able to re-establish beneficial bacteria faster.

Thank you and I will do it the next round. Roughly how long does the bacteria need to reestablish the colony?
Two weeks or so and you need not have to keep cleaning filter so often. Is this an internal filter?
