    Hi,

Here I want to show some photos of one of my few tanks of F1 uberis "Pangkalanbuun". Most importantly, I would like to use these as a record of the variations I've seen so far in this species.

Pardon for the reflections. The fishes are kept in a blackwater environment, as they hail from the peat swamps in the island of Borneo and also, for me to observe their behavior as they are found in the wild.

Male uberis, F1 bred by Bernard. I hope to breed this male with one of my many females to set up a 2nd line of breeders.

According to Seriouslyfish, some forms of B. uberis possess an iridescent bluish to greenish lateral blotch and may be more easily mistaken for other species such as B. brownorum and B. coccina but others do not and in some cases can only be separated from B. burdigala by morphometric characters.

My original wild caught male lacks the lateral blotch and it would be interesting to see if this is a recessive/dominant trait. I have about eight F2 fry now. I am going to see if any of the fry shows this lateral blotch once they mature.

    Re: Betta uberis "Pangkalanbuun"

A photo of the parental generation, wild caught male, sire of the F1 uberis. Unfortunately, he's extremely reclusive, preferring to laze around the ferns and dead leaves rather than in the open. It's hard for me to get a decent photo of his body, without the lateral blotch. Besides, there are fry in the tank and I don't want to disturb him too much.

An out-of-focus photo but if you observe carefully, you will notice that the bluish-green lateral spot is missing.

    Look at the tail!

Minimum tank size for a group would be 23L. A breeding pair would only need about 12L. These bubblenesters never grow past 6cm TL, as with all coccina species.

Nice. Glad that the male looks good and healthy. Pictures from the side will always appear as though the fishes look really green. But try shining your torch from the top. You'll see a lot more blue.
    Cheers,

Yeap. Both males are fine but you only see one here because I separated them into two tanks. Practically all of the F1 uberis are females, so I'm back crossing a few selected females either to the older male or your males.

I especially like the contrasting green/bluish red. Looks very pretty, along with the long dorsal. Raising the fry alongside their father. Intending to fish them out once they are a bit more stable.

Been two months since I last update on the new brood of fry. They vary in sizes, ranging from 1-2 cm. Currently raising them in a 12 litres tank. Fed exclusively on tubifex worms.

Once again, pardon for the photos. The glass is quite dusty and the views are obscured because the fry are kept in a tank filled with Java moss, ferns and Cryptocoryne wendtii "Tropica". The fry were quite shy and darted off the moment I tried to snap the pictures.

    Thanks. The photos may look deceiving, actually, but they are still tiny, probably about half the size of your thumb. I hope there's a male but anyhow, I'm going to breed the females from this brood to a male I obtained from Sam, and here he is;

He's in a tank all by himself. As you can see, Sam's male has a shiny lateral blotch which all my fish lacks or when present, is very faint. The other pair, also from Sam, shows a tinge of red on the pectoral fins, very unusual for wild specimen. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to breed the pair and they died, due to my negligence during the exam period, so this male is my last hope.

Looks like the fishes are doing well! Good luck in keeping the line strong. The lateral spot is one of the features I like a lot about this species too.

Yeah....hopefully. Most of my earlier generation of females are gone. I'm leaving around 10 females behind, just in case. Sad to say, the palangkaraya (B. hendra) have not bred. Are you interested to swap a female with one of your breeding males?

A few shots of a male, without the lateral blotch.

Notice the strong emerald green iridescence on the flanks of the body. Also, the caudal becomes more spade-like as the fish gets older, which is only seen in males. As of writing, this particular male is about 1.5 years of age, maybe older, because it's a wild-caught specimen.
