    Hi Mike,

    Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

The second and third picture may be the same type of shrimp. Over here, we call it wood shrimp or mountain shrimp. Sometimes also known as Singapore shrimp overseas.

The bit about walking on land is interesting. I do find that they sometimes try to get of of the tank for a walk, often their last trip anywhere.

    Cheers,

As they are filter feeders, it's no surprise that they are found at areas with faster flowing water.

Here's an old picture of mine showing how they feed.

interesting! I always have the idea that wood shrimp is native to Germany after reading an article saying a fellow found one in his pipe few storeys up a flat.

What is the behavior of the shrimp in such a fast flowing stream? In the aquarium, they are more or less lazing around, hooking to somewhere and hiding. Are they agile, moving here and there or you gotta dig into rocks and under the logs for them?

Was told Pulau Tioman got a lot, probably amongst the rocky crevice in those fast flowing streams. HH even ate a lot of them, apparently not too tasty

    Re: shrimp collected last Saturday

Michael, the pictures of the shrimps and biotope are very interesting. Natural habitat is something we don't get to see often on our urbanized island.

I find the first shrimp unusual. Did you take closer pics of the hairy pincers or have you released it back into the river?

For anyone keeping the woodshrimps in their aquarium, these are not your usual active shrimps. They prefer to get a good grip, where the filter outlet is, open their 'satelite' filter-pincers and collect food. For their size, they're fish-friendly but not competitive for food like yamatos. Remember to cater to their needs (daphnia, BBS, etc) and they are not algae eaters.

Michael, pic 2 and 3 shows what we call Singapore or Wood shrimp Atyopsis moluccensis. It is a fan shrimp and hence cannot feed on algae (at least not the non-free floating type).

Pic 1 shows some other shrimp. It has an arm much larger than the Singapore shrimp. Is it also a fan shrimp?

    Re: pincer

Michael, the wood shrimp opens up it's 'satellite' to filter organisms carried in the current, which is why it hangs around the filter output (or any spot where the current flows). As far as I know, it isn't an algae eater but interesting to observe it's feeding habit (collect collect, squirt squirt into mouth )

Your new pic of the 'hairy pincer' shrimp doesn't show it's pincers well. Does it operate like a regular* or modified pincer (as in filtering type)? Care to shoot more pics when it's eating?

    * 'regular' like those found in crayfish, crabs, etc.

    hairy

ok...i'm trying to use digital zoom to show the hairy pincers...not very clear but i'll take another pix when it is eating something. It doesn't own any "fan"...so it is a normal shrimp.....& of course not an algae eater.
    Here is the pix:

don't use digital zoom, get to maximum optical zoom, take the highest resolution possible. if we need to see the details at least we can download the file instead of viewing on screen.

Maybe you can take a better picture after he settle down in your tank? I would like to see how it look like when he's feeding on food. Very nice unique shrimp indeed
