    Hi Fiq & Erctheanda,

My tank is not well setup as it is a temporary setup due to some unforeseen circumstances (Nephew got so excited seeing the crab hunting small cricket that it smash the glass)

This is the tank i'm currently keeping for my Red Apple Crab & Batik Crab

This is my current tank setup for vampire crabs (previously there are java moss in it but due to over-grazing, i have taken out the java moss to prevent extinction)

Here are some of the pics of the Vampire Crab / Batik Crab

Yes, those PVC elbows are served as a hiding spot for them. I am thinking of adding mroe decorations so they can have more hiding spot.

Vampire Crabs are very shy and peaceful creature and will run for cover at the slightest movement (at first). However they are very crazy about chicken liver, they can fight with each other just to compete a small piece of the meat.

The gravel you are using were colored gravel? I typically would not keep them with anything that was artificially colored, in case they react to the dyes or paints that were used.

Yes, they were used quite long, like 1years++ (when i was still rearing goldfish.)

However i do agree with you that colored gravel might cause implication, however i have used it for around 6 months and its just temporary as i'm trying to squeeze out some budget to change the soil + tank

I see, mini red claw crab are territorial if there are multiple males in it and they will pinch if use by hand ><

As for rearing of crab, i dont mind trading / selling my batik and red apple crab... managed to get them pregnant 2 times but the young keeps dying so im giving up...

    Re: Greetings to everyone~!

Ok, now I have no idea how to identify sexes for crabs...keke

Recently purple crabs are getting popular, mini size...but not sure if they can grow as big as rainbow crabs...if no, I may start rearing that..

Now I am thinking how to prevent them from climbing out of the tank coz no matter what filter I use (HOF, sponge, submersible), they can climb out thru the air tubing or cable...unless I don't use filter which I dun think it's advisable..few mths back I actually used a net to catch my red-claw and it climb out of the net and started crawling away..it did freak me out as it was crawling quite fast...had difficulty getting hold of it!

The sexes of the crab are easily identified. The male bottom is usually sharp and steep and the female are usually broader. Its the same as eating chilli crab (mud crab to be exact)

Purple crab you are refering to is the so called "vampire" crab. It will not grow as big as rainbow crab and the maximum length it can grow is around 2 inch.

Hm... i do not add pump into my tank. You just need to ensure moist or water in the tank (minimum high enough to let them submerge)

Yes bro, i am referring to vampire crab
I thought would be good to add a pump as they will also excrete waste or there are balance food around in the tank?

    Re: Greetings to everyone~!

Haha... then no need to worry as they wont grow that long.
Yes they would excrete waste and usually i would make my sand / gravel thick so that the waste would go to the bottom of tank.

As for the leftover that are not consume, that never happen to me as i feed them once a day. I also put in java moss for them to graze on if they are still hungry.

Any idea why the young kept dying??? Is it due to absence of food?

    Re: Greetings to everyone~!

Young for which type of crab?

If you are saying vampire crab, the youngs are matured instead of larvae stage.

Ig yiu are dayibg batik / red apple crab, thrir young need to go thru egg - larvae and mutate to lil crab. The young will need salt water as they will need to feed on plankton.
