    Hi All,

I'm sharing one of my tank with only portion of tank with soil. This is to make it easier for me to decom the tank next time.

Just using a box instead of making a soil partition. When decom I will just need to take out the box.

    Here the picture.

Is that sufficient to buffer the water parameters?

Re: Sharing my recent setup tank

reminds me of my 1.5 ft shrimp tank set up.

To share my experience, i used 4 of those takeout boxes, rectangular ones. planted them all with water wisteria.

1 of the boxes, i drilled small hoes near the base. some soil (and roots) when disintegrated will come out from the holes.

all 4 boxes of water wisteria grew well, with the drilled box one doing the best. the drilled box is also nearer to the inflow (i using HOB canister).

as a result of using the takeout boxes, i had gaps in between the boxes. circulation is a problem. so i removed 2 of the boxes to "alleviate" the issue abit. my ottos are always in the gaps..... maybe more food there?
I am balding but i am still young!

Water parameter should be no problem as my other tanks with thin soil which is lesser then this, the water parameter is ok and shrimp doing well too.

The box I'm using have holes below. circulation is not a problem to me. I'm keeping only shrimp inside.

Interesting technique... i did something similar when i started my tanks too, but it was more to cycle the filter in the meantime while i was still figuring out the layout and gathering stuff.

I put ADA Amazonia Aquasoil in a few plastic boxes, then put them into the bare tank for a few weeks and let the filter run with it, basically to utilize the soil's initial released ammonia to kickstart the filter cycling process. After that it was easy to remove and reuse the soil again.

Are those boxes used actually modular overhead filter compartments? I will love to try it when re-vamping my tanks.

Yes that one of the reason, if next time want to change soil can anytime prepare another box in advance and just replace it.

Yes this box is Mr Aqua filter box, I just place a fine sponge or wool below to cover the holes.

This box is cheaper then custom made it with same dimension without holes below.

Actually... come to think of it, creating an entire aquascape made up of many small plastic boxes of soil and plants could be very useful... imagine anytime want to change the scape, just remove one box of lush plants and replace with another box full of different plants, can shift plant boxes easily between tanks. No more mess of uprooting and re-planting.

Its like the ultimate modular aquascape, even easier than wabi-kusa!
