IMHO, both types are certified for use.... the aluminium one is lighter but it costs more... advantage is that it will be easier to lug ard.... especially when bringing it for refills....
I have co2 tank which seems to be made of different material. I green colour is heavy and seems to be a heavy duty cast iron while the othet one which I got from H20, is lighter and looks like aluminium type.
Is there any different in terms of quality and durability. and whats roughly the price difference. thanx

THanx wf7850. Anymore inputs from other forumer?
both materials are being used for co2 cylinders. but make sure that there are markings stamped on the 'shoulder'. these shows the test date, pressure,...
aluminium cylinder cost more, is lighter, looks nicer and don't rust. steel cylinder is just the opposite.
anyway for aquarium use, it doesn't really matter if you use aluminium or steel cylinders. follow what your pockets tell you.
The LFS near my house says that many places won't refill aluminium canisters because scared explode.
Oh, the rare old Whale, mid storm and gale. In his ocean home will be. A giant in might, where might is right. And King of the boundless sea.
Certified aluminium cylinders are safe. If they are unsafe, they won't be found ubiquitously in 7-11, Kopi-tiam etc to give the fizzle to our Coke and 7-up. Beside, I have O2 aluminium cylinders that are 2000psi instead of 1000psi for CO2.The LFS near my house says that many places won't refill aluminium canisters because scared explode.
I don't know why the different? Sure like to have mine at 2000psi, last twice longer
certified aluminium cylinder are safe.
i am sure that it is widely used around the world.
it is not something unique to local aquaria.
well, do the refillers trust the certification then? My impression from my LFS is that he had experience from refillers reluctant to refill aluminium ones.

That is strange. We hear more often refillers are less willing to refill old and uncertified cylinders instead, not the other way around.
Here are some things learnt from Chemgas. All good and certified steel cylinders will have a date of manufactured stamped on it. Every 5 years, a cylinder has to be re-certified as safe, date will be stamped again. Aluminium cylinders are preferred because it weighs lesser and does not corrode on the exterior. If refilling is done correctly, your cylinder should be very, very cold. In fact, so cold the exterior is frozen. How much to refill is by volume to determine the weight of gas to be filled. Japanese valve are the best. Chinese cylinders are too brittle hence not very safe. Soxal will not refill some Chinese cylinders.
so do you go for instant refills?
actually seen a 'frozen' co2 cylinder?
Yup, fill and collect at Chemgas. And it's frozen like they say.
Thanx for all the replies. Helps a lot.
Btw, how do we get the cylinder to be retest?
How much for the test?
Chemgas & Soxal address?
Does our regular LFS provide testing of cylinders?
chemgas and soxal would have the capability to hydrostatic test your co2 cylinder. check lfs list for address details.
lfs should be able to get certified test houses to provide such test. another value add service for customers.
