This article should be required reading for all young people (and old) who live in this region.

As any hobbyist will come to realise, there is a bewildering number of species of creatures found in habitats in the tropics, and yet these habitats are disappearing rapidly, especially in Southeast Asia. Even sober business-minded publications like the Economist (in this week's issue) note that the destruction of rainforests is a significant factor in global warming. Besides that, there is the unquantifiable cost of every species that is lost, in both its value as a potential contributor to man's welfare as well as the sheer richness of man's awareness of nature.

But as most people here will say, as fish is a fish is a fish (replace with bird, lizard, snake, plant, moss or anything you wish). Nature's variety has only just begun to be unveiled by modern science, but already it may be too late to save much of the species in the region's peat swamps (which are seen as useless waters) and other biodiversity hotspots, as governments (in ignorance or from corrupt incentives) sacrifice irreplaceable wealth for short-term economic gains.

Just think about that, and if you do happen to be in a position to do anything......

In South and Central America, nature groups have been able to buy up patches of jungle or swamp to prevent them from being developed..... in SEA, unfortunately, this option seems untried, and unfeasible, in the light of political and bureacractic realities.

budak, I agree with what's being said on the article. Every single patch of habitat, regardless man-made or natural has some living thing on it. Like they say, there's no "sexy" big animals on these so-called "lifeless" places like mosquito infested peat swamps. Sadly, even if we do get together to raise money to buy a piece of a land, many questions will come into play. The bureacratic red tape already stifles whatever attempts there may be. At least for now places like Tanjung Chek Jawa exist as protected environments on our tiny island. Perhaps the next time we meet up we'll have a better talk on conservation.

P.S. Thanks for highlighting the article though.
