Take the pictures at night making sure all other lights in the house are off except the tank lights.
Do not use flash unless your flash has off-camera capability to put over the tank top. Or if you intend to use direct flash, take the tank picture at an angle and not directly.

Thx juggler.
Anyone of you got experience in using a ixus camera? I am having a hardtime focusing on a specific target using manual mode. Always focusing on something else beside the target.
What da fish!
Manual mode? I don't understand why you have trouble focusing... except that the LCD/viewfinder is too small.
If you are using auto-focus, set to macro mode. If it works like Sony DCs, that will reduce the area that the camera uses to determine the focus. Good for small subjects and reduces the chance that the camera focuses on the background behind the subject. Just make sure the subject is dead center of your picture when you half-press the button.
Tank lights shining on you can also show you reflected on the glass. If you are taking a full tank pic, use an opaque board to block the lights. If you can get a board that is white or shiny even better.... it'll help to reflect light back into the tank.
If you are taking up-close pics of subjects close tot he bottomof the tank, it helps to stick an opaque board on the top half of the front glass panel.
Wear dark clothes.
Put the camera lens as close to the glass as possible. Then less of the glass is in the picture and less likely you will see a reflection.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Now I feel like trading in my Ixus 500 for a Canon 300D coz I hate the focusing of the Ixus 500. :P
What da fish!
all point and shoots are too slow to AF on things such as fishes, other than dead ones.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
