    Re: Under Gravel Filter

UGF works by pulling water into gravel. If you can visualize this there are more cons than pro:
    1. Gravel gets chocked with dirt and decaying matter.
    2. Need more gravel cleaning.
    3. High nitrite level due to above 1
    4. Fish die get sick due to above 3
    5. Algae bloom due to above 3.

To be honest,UGF is dated. You are better off with your overhead filter.
If you are planning to upgrade, get yourself a canister filter.

If tis just a simple gravel and hardscape tank....UGF will be my choice....

    Re: Under Gravel Filter

I use UGF for my terrapin tank.

For the same tank, i have used a canister, 3 ft OHF with Biohomme and jap matt.

Now i am using UGF with Biohomme and Lapis sand. Tested for ammonia once in each configuration, only managed to get 0ppm for the UGF configuration.

thats why i am still using it.

I have the base of the 3 ft tank completely covered (needed some sawing) with the UGF, a green mesh, biohomme and topped off with lapis sand. UGF is ran using a 1200L/hr pump.

Cleaning is difficult. remove the terrapin
push in the side of the gravel (biohomme and lapis sand)
    pull out the green mesh
RUN TO THE TOILET. you can walk if the green mesh fits into a pail without the sand spilling over.
    wash the gravel,
    RUN BACK TO TANK
lay it out and even out the gravel..
    Put back terrified terrapin.
    Done.
I am balding but i am still young!
