Melafix should cure it. Just stick to the prescribed dosage and it should be fine (:
Also, Try not to mix medications (:
Hi guys,
Previously my tank was down with white spots and haven been treating it for about 2 weeks plus already. 5 fishes died, and now the sterbai cories are already showing signs of fin rot (Part of dorsal fin& tail fin turn transparent?). Other fishes look fine. Tested both ammonia and nitrite to be 0 ppm.

Any experts who can share which brand of medication is good for fin rot? Is Melafix good? or By the way, does mixing ich med with fin rot med cause any problems? Thanks.

Water change.. Siphon ur sand add some salt...
Usually I do all those... Ich will be gone...
And fin will recover.
FAILURE IS THE MOTHER OF ALL SUCCESS
Be very careful on the application of salt as Cory are sensitive to salt.
I am also facing the same problem in a com tank.
Currently I am only doing water changes to tackle the problem. Hopefully, it will solve the issue.
Maybe we can share our experience on this topic.

Unbranded aquarium salt is about ~$1 in LFS as Whitechick07 mentioned.
Supermarkets sell several types of sale.
- One type is called called "table salt" or "iodized salt". This contains small amounts of iodine which is not good for fishes.
- There is another type of supermarket salt called "Kosher salt". This is sea salt & is the same as aquarium salt - can be used for your tank.
Yup I've read the same about cories being sensitive to salt, is highly not recommended for them.
Hopefully more water changes for now will let them recover from the fin rot.
Good to know someone share the same problem so we can tackle it together
Oh another question, does any of you guys use activated carbon after medication treatment?? Like is it really necessary?
Or just water change is equally good?
I've used some salt with panda cory without much issue. But again, it was more for preventive step than for medication. I used 2 tablespoon per 100L.
Activated carbon absorbs chloramines, chlorine, tannins (which color the water) and phenols (which cause odors). I understand it does not do anything for bacteria/virus.
One school of thought to improve water quality is to use a UV sterilizer. With the right flow rate, it removes free form algae, parasite & bacteria. This could help reduce future occurrences of fin rot or ich.
Personally, I had a spate of fin rot / columnaris. Affected fishes were removed & died since. I did install a UV sterilizer & new occurrence has dropped to a zero.
Thanks for sharing.
The UV is a new knowledge to me.

Just an update, I have bought aquarium salt yesterday and I've dosed about 1 tablespoon broken into two days to prevent shock for cories.
They do not look distressed or anything or so. for the info on salt with panda cory, made me decided to get salt.
I think is important to dissolve the salt in tank water separately instead of dumping straight in to prevent cory deaths.
Will update again, if they do look better.
@Vipered the activated carbon is used after treatment when the fish has recovered to remove the medicine in the water as it is no longer needed For Ich outbreaks just vacuum the tank floor or sand every other day removes the Ich at some stage of their life cycle ^^
Agreed with bro GHD97. While using medication, do remove active carbon first (if currently in filter system).
Once fishes recovered, only then you place active carbon in to remove medications, chemical residue.
As for salt, been using in my Comm tank, C.Sterbai, C.Panda, C.Dupli, C.Gold & Green Lasers, so far no issues at all. But of course, precations need to be taken too. Not to overdose.
Good luck & speedy recovery!!!
1 tbs is for how many feet bro?
i am losing fishes fast, outbreak here.
victims are tetras and discuss.
my tank is 2ft, 45cm height. planted, with cory, pleco, and snails.

Yours is a comm tank like mine.
Very tricky to tackle individual.
So I guess it is still down to good water parameters.
Any ideas what caused the rot?
New fishes? New food?
What is your water regime?

i think i moved them too fast to my new planted, they were in temporary tank after we moved house. both filters have run for month+.

I think the treatment is one tablespoon per gallon. If you add abit of salt on a usual basis then add about 1.5 tablespoon per gallon. Are your fish very stressed from the transfer? Sometimes when catching fish we may be too aggressive...chasing the fish with a net. Best to be patient and coax or herd them gently.
When are they being introduced to the tank?
Have you tested your water? Fully cycled? If yes, I will not recommend adding of salt for now.
Since you had done a 50% wc, I will recommend you to monitor for now. Adding salt might stressed the pleco, Cory and tetra further if they are no used to the salt content.
