Yes, most moss can grow just floating in the water, though if they drift around and happen to catch onto an object they may attach to it over time too.

Not much, but yes mosses do still need fertilizers to grow My java moss grows pretty well in my low tech tank with no aquarium lights and only 1/8 of fertilizer dosage for normal plants^^

    Re: Growing of moss

Moss don't require much nutrients to grow... a tank with fishes usually already provides more than enough nutrients for the moss (more often too much!).

Though if you have a bare tank with no fishes, then some ferts can help supplement their nutrient needs.

I keep various types of mosses in plastic containers with only treated tap water, placed them near to a window to get some partial sunlight and they still grow.

    Growing of moss

Thanks guys!! And one last question. Are their light requirements low?? Because what I'm doing now is just leaving my tank light off during the day an letting sunlight to shine on them. And switch on the lights for around 4-5 hours at night

    Re: Growing of moss

Java moss has really low light requirements I don't know about christmas moss but I guess it should be the same?^^ water flow is important though helps moss to grow and prevents unsightly algae growth which could smother the moss.

Your current photo regime should be fine

Oh no, no wonder my existing moss isn't growing. I have not switched on my filter for a few weeks.... And now there's some white stuffs growing on it.

    Re: Growing of moss

Ohhhh... Water flow should be so that moss fronds are slightly swaying in the current, like coconut trees in a gentle breeze^^ same for all plants I might add

By the way I assume your tank does not have any fauna?

    Growing of moss

So the water flow is needed for the whole 24 hours?? I have 50 neon tetras and countless of Malaysian trumpet snails

    Re: Growing of moss

O.O and they don't need a filter? hahaha excuse my surprise... Hmmm...I guess it would be fine to just have water flow when light is on, so maybe off the filter at night?^^

By the way, if you switch on your filter, it would go through a nitrogen cycle lasting a month, in that time your water parameters would go haywire....nitrite spikes that could be fatal to your fauna. Especially since you don't use a filter and you're quite heavily stocked

You could consider using a power head just for water current

    Re: Growing of moss

I'm amused myself when I first tried it but neon are tough fishes so I think they wouldn't be affected. I'll just leave my filter on and see what happens

    Re: Growing of moss

Okays^^ neon tetras are tough^^ By the way if you turn off your filter every day at night, you need not worry about nitrogen cycle so maybe it would be best not to keep it on for a full day

That way you keep your water parameters stable and helps clean the fish poo^^ I'm saying this cause a mature filter that is switched off is no joke. When my father pulled the plug of my filter out at night, my whole tank crashed...all fish died by next morning.

Either you keep it on all the time or switch it off everyday

No problem I did not mention everything needed to be done when cycling a tank. Do read up on the sources from AQ or they can be found all over the net
