I've been keeping tiger shrimps for a few weeks now and they are slowly dying off. I'm not really sure what's happening. Water parameters are fine. The odd thing I've noticed is that they don't really feed on the algae wafers I gave them. They only scavenge and eat the debris and scraps from the mosses and soil.

Guys, what's wrong and what do I do? ):

I don't really have any readings though but the tank have been cycled for a few months now. I'm pretty sure the nitrate and nitrite levels are alright since I got some frogbits in the tank (I know that they absorb excess nitrate and nitrites efficiently)

My temperature is 30 degrees Celsius. The pH was 6.4 the last time I check and I'm not sure how to check GH & KH
Yeah, they are Caridina cantonensis sp 'Tiger' (:

Your temperature is too high. Caridina species need lower temperature to thrive and breed, i.e. 23 to 26 degrees.

I suspect the major factor to be temperature too. Shrimps are sensitive, proper aclimatisation for gradual adaption from the source/lfs's water to own tank's water is a must too.

So do I have to invest in a cooling fan? Or is there any DIY method to cooling my temperature?

Use house fan, or PC fan and diy holder power use old phone charger.
30degree keep some shrimps is slow death for the poor fellas.

Gh kh and ph all are tested similar ways using their own test kit.

Fan can only bring down 1~2 degrees below room temperature.

Oh, I never used a chiller before though. Is there a small one that I can buy because my tank is only 19.8 liters.

If you are intending to stick to this tank and only this tank. DIY a computer fan. Go SimLimSquare source for the cheapest, quietest 6mm or 12mm fan.

If you are intending to go deeper into this hobby and is intending to upgrade the tank. Invest in a chiller.

Reason I DIY my own fan is because Computer fans are much more quiet unlike aquarium fans which gives the "hooooooom" sound and the adapter is freaking hot.

DIY ones you can set your preferred speed 3v,6v,9v,12v using ACDC adapter.

Re: Why are my shrimps dying?!

If you are serious about this hobby, I would advise you to get a bigger tank, i.e. 2ft tank, and get a chiller n canister filter system. 20 liters is a bit small to maintain constant water parameters for shrimps. Plus once shrimps are happy and start breeding, your shrimps will thank you for the extra space.
And cooler temperature also allows for better plant growth, i.e. moss, which are a common sight in shrimp tanks.

I agree with a lot of bros. A small tank is very difficult to maintain a stable parameter. Upgrade your tank should be of a higher priority, then decide whether a chiller is needed. It depends how invest you want to be? if you see yourself in this hobby for only a short period, might not be wise to invest so much, perhaps you might choose a shrimp species that is less demanding.

I'm actually planning to just stick with this tank though. No plans to upgrade though.

What species of shrimps are easier to care for? 0.o

Your ph is 6.4. But temperature 30c. You have to either choose to 1) increase ph 2) reduce temperature. To suit caridina or neocaridina.

Re: Why are my shrimps dying?!

Temperature and pH aside... even if the tank has been running for a few months with plants, without actually measuring the ammonia/nitrite/nitrates, its possible any of them could have somehow spiked and you wouldn't know for sure what happened (ie. filter not efficient enough, need cleaning or need to do more water changes). Smaller volume tanks have less buffer for supporting fishes and shrimps and can sometimes take more months to cycle, so it'll be good to get a test kit to get a better idea of the water conditions.

TDS could also have accumulated to high levels too, especially in a tank running for a while with lots of feeding and not enough water changes, a TDS meter (you can get the basic ones from LFS or online) would allow you more insight into the tank conditions.

Red cherry shrimps generally have the highest tolerance for a wider range of water parameters (though they are not invincible and still more sensitive than fishes), so you may look at keeping those for starters.

Still need get temperature down to at least 28 degrees and below for neocaridina. pH is ok if you acclimatize the shrimps properly.

Well, thanks for the help guys.
