Does anyone uses UV lighting for their planted tank?

If yes, how is the connection of the hose to filter and chiller?

...and is it really necessary? Thanks for all responses.

I think they use UV lighting mainly to kill off algae spores..

... and other micro-organisms that float by the UV... including bacteria and viruses, etc.

It should be connected in-line after the filter. It does not really matter if it's before or after the other equipment. Personally, I feel it should be the first equipment after the filter... zap them before they enter the other equipment.

IMO, it is not necessary. A well-run planted tank will never need that.

    Necessary? No.

Useful? Yes. They are useful tools for removing certain types of algae when you have an outbreak, BUT there are effective methods of dealing with algae without UV.

    Thanks for the answer.

Reason being that I have to detached my 1250 uv lights after it seems like the water flow got slower due to it. I'm using a 2028 with art 1/5 hp chill.

The uv is in the centre. Was told to get another submiss pump to do the trick. But make my 5ft tank look extremely rather ugly with so many pipes.

Just want to be sure that it is not required before I detached the whole uv light.

    Hi,
Mostly from my experience the UV will be helpful for tank which :
    1. Minimalist setup from beginning (only using 1-2 types of med-gro plants such hairgrass setup in Amano's style etc)
    2. Most of the tank filled with slo-gro plants such anubias family & microsorium
You can run the UV using timer in the same time your lighting system run.
This will help to prevent algae attack but still no guarantee if you will 100% free from algae (again this based on how well you can maintain natural ecosystem inside your tank)
And the position of the UV should be after canister.
The UV bulb will be effective for 1 year with 9-10 hrs daily operation.
    Hope this help..
    Cheers,

    AChen
