Hi guys I read on some websites that nitrite can only be produced in the absence of ammonia but when I used my api water testing kits it shows around 2 ppm ammonia, 5++ ppm nitrite and 180ppm of nitrate. Does this mean my tank is going to complete cycling soon? Been running for about 3 weeks and the ammonia source is from the shrimp soil I'm using. Few days ago ammonia was 4 ppm 0 nitrite 0 nitrate. After adding atm bacteria colony from green chapter 2 days ago my water suddenly became like this. Anyone knows what it means?

Re: questions about the nitrogen cycle

The examples in some websites are just based on a generalized cycle pattern for easier explanation... ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels can rise and fall independent of each other, so it doesn't always follow a set linear pattern, how it progresses all depends on the growth of the different types of bacteria.

Those test results you got indicate that the cycle is progressing... it should eventually complete cycling soon.
