Nature is selling JBL fert for only $15. And I don't know, my JBL didnt smell. Actually they come in packs of 5 litres (not kg) so it is quite easy to calculate by volume.
Now for your reference, this is my results assuming you will do a flat landscape of 4cm thick base fert and 3cm thick gravel. If you have significant slope etc adjust accordingly.
6 bags of JBL fert (30 litres) = 120cm x 60cm x 4cm
and 2 bags of lonestar (you'd need around 1.5 bags so some spare for landscaping).
You may want an extra bag of JBL for landscaping or to increase the thickness. The gravel don't need to put too thick.

Thks for the response.
Any idea how much is the Dennerle fertilizer and gravel??
Where to get cheaper?? Have saw quite a bit of Dennerle staff at Soon Heng 88 but don't know the price. Might want to try it out if the price difference is not too much.
Cheers
gravel ard $30+ to $40+ per 10kg, base fert ard $40+ per 5kg tub

Hi Small Fish
The dennerle gravel is $38 (10kg) & there's a few natural colours to choose fr, but i can't help u wif the base fert price...sorry. But do give the JBL base fert a try. It doesn't smell at all, unless u have the nose (& clumsy hands) of a marine hobbyist. Like Choy mentioned, it's $15 per pack at nature...the cheapest so far...

i find that you can afford to get less gravel
and MUCH more fert
the first layer in should be gravel, and cover that with fert, as much as you can get your hands on
then cover it with a substantial amount of gravel
i find having your substrate fert too deep down means that heavy root feeders like lotus, crypts and echinodorus won't do as well, unless you pump in a lot of root supplements
my current 2 ft tank is doing very well
the fert is only 4cm below the gravel
you can see the roots growing among it already
my 2 cts
nevermind, covered by glosso already, kekeke----------------

what sort of maintenance is needed? mine just a month old so no maintenance yet. My tank only 80cm x 30cm lah, but when I planted them I make them kenan lurus properly you see, so every where is covered already, except the two sides not so thick yet cos there wasn't enough lights (dumb PL tube too short) but now I have 4W per gallon and evenly distributed, kekekeke...----------------
