I'm going to set up a 2.5ft tank with just moss and driftwood for cherry shrimps. However due to space constraint, I'm thinking of using an internal filter for my tank. The hydra 30 is one of my best option but my only worry now is will the suction and the current be too strong for shrimplets? Because there's no sponge for me to cover up the inlet.

I have not much experience in covering up an internal filter, but I have heard that people do use things such as pantyhose or any fine/thin cloth material. Next option to consider is also a fine wiremesh, if I remember correctly, one of the members here use wire mesh to guard their filter inlet.

If space allows it, a hang on back filter is probably better, as the inlet can be easily managed by a sponge and allows more space in your tank as well.

Pantyhose is not good as it is too fine and will easily clogged up after a couple of days. Consider using those nylon netting material from washing bags or mosquito net material. Look around Japan Home, etc to find them. That will prevent your prawns from being sucked into the filter too.

So I wrap it around the filter suction inlet as though I'm wearing a sock?

Yes. Do note the disadvantages of panty hose/fine cloth if you ever decide to use one.

Note that day 1 shrimplets are 1-2mm.
