You need to chop all those leaves from the Java fern which are carrying seeds, the plant will stop putting out as much growth while those leaves are still there. You can pick off the spores with a razor blade and place in a shallow tray of peat and they will sprout new baby ferns for you!

It's a hard thing to chop off all those nice leaves but if you leave them the plant will suffer a bit

My low tech office shrimp tank

This is my 1.5 ft office shrimp only tank - sorry for the lousy picture quality, took it with a video camera. No CO2, 42W lights, water change weekly (if I remember). I have cherries and CRS in there. Used to keep it tidy and nice but been lazy and too busy lately so it looks a bit messy. The tank has been setup for more than half a year. Sometimes you can see bubbles on the mosses - because of CO2 from the shrimps? The mesh on the walls are new so it's not covered with moss yet.

not very sure but i think is java moss. was given by my friend.
the hairgrass is just a normal type of hairgrass, and is growing quite slow since it is a non co2 tank.
the thing on the right is actually a wood tied with moss as well

so far only 4 otos and 10 low grade crs in the tank. intend to add more crs.

sorry OT, anyone selling grade c crs? please pm me the price and picture. prefer to deal in north or north east area.

    thanks

    Question Lowest Tech Tank

    Hi all enthusiatic,
I brought Diana Walstad's edition almost 5 years ago and since then has beening experimenting with all sort of tank sizing from 2 to 30 litres. Results are amazing once you got the ecology kicking.

I am very energy saving conscious, thus my tanks only use a small air pump creating big bubbles by connecting it to a bellmouth. Bubbling at 1/2'' cube/sec. Main purpose to provide simple circulation and enough amount of dissolve air enough for the fishes. Big bubbles would not fizzle off bio-CO2 for the plants. The only light source is window lighting. My window faces the north, thus no direct sunlight.

Substrate: 1'' Garden soil beneath 3'' sand.
    Fertilizer: Fish food.
Bioload: 5 to 10 fishers, cherry shrimps about 10 and lots of snail.
    Size of tank: 30 litres.
Plant: Java Moss, emerging, submerging plant and floating.. (sorry not very good with the name of plant)
    Age: About 3 years.
    Temperature: ambient.
I am not good at scaping. Wander if anyone would like to see my wild and unscaped creation.

    Lowest Tech Tank

Starting from 20 litres tank...Several type of plants found inside are allow to grow unscaped.
    1st Picture: Overview.
2nd Picture: Side view showing the air tubing plug into a bottle cap giving big bubbles.
    3rd Picture:Inner view of plants.
4th Picture: Floating plants and money creeper.Money plant does a great job in bio-filtration, very quickly removing excessive food generated nutrient. It growth so fast it creep out & down to my lower neighbour.
5th Picture: Thick substrate - 1'' soil beneath 3'' sand.
    Age: 3 years old++.
CO2 and fertilizer: Only Fish food. More food, more bio CO2 and nutrient, led to more plant growth. Especially the floating plant.
    Light source: Window.
