Here's my low tech tank.
Although I do occasionally cheat and add a bit of ferts every once in a while. But its been more then a month since i last 'cheated'.

supaoopa: That's nice. So do you use any soil or base fertiliser? Is that E.tenellus in the front?
It's OK to added some fertiliser once in a while when the plants need it. When we mean low-tech, it meant non-CO2 and very little maintenance.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

Juggler's tanks
Sharing my low-tech 1ft cube started in Nov 2004.
No filter. No CO2.
Fish: Cherry Shrimps and Boraras Maculatas.
Plants: Taiwan Moss, Narrow-leaf Java Fern.
Fertilising: a few drops of traces weekly.
Water change: top up every few days. 25% once a month.
Light: 9W PL, 10 hours running with DIY fan.
The Cherry Shrimps have expanded in population since then. So I guess they live quite happily with the Boraras.
Comments/ suggestions most welcome.

Yeah, its Echinodorus tenellus v. 'Tenellus.' AKA: Pygmy chain sword.Originally Posted by juggler
The substrate is just plain black gravel with nothing added to it. I'm actually a bit suprised its turned out so well considering its only a 8watt bulb and random ferts.
Nice tank.

What about filter, is there any in this tank?
No filter. Not sure if that's the reason for non-clear water...

Things still going on well without water change/ filtration/ fertilisation. Planted some Sagittaria subulata some months back after the soil bacteria died in early Jan 2005 because of a 3-day blackout, which also wiped out the fish population. Crypts in the foreground are dying out slowly and the Sag is trying to creep to the front.

fazlee,
nice tank there consisting of only narrow leaf java ferns. however i think you should remove that garden pebble. a bit out of place it is.
Maybe you can consider using e. tenulluss to cover the left fore ground. with or with out, its your choice because i think the tank looks peaceful albeit with "murky" water (photograph?)
Hey ya guys, this is my rendition of one footer series which i did a few weeks back. Setup is basically simple with black quartz as base substrate and a small piece of driftwood. Accents such as twigs were used to in accordance to the height if the tank which was 17.5 inches.
Flora includes taiwan moss, narrow leaved java ferns, e.quad n long hair grass variant. As it's relatively new, i'm just leaving the entire scape to mature and progress slowly. In the coming days, java moss will adorn the foreground a little, not in a wild manner look but in a more controlled one. They'll be tied evenly onto black pebbles and sunk into the substrate exposing only the java moss.
That will have to come in time but for now, these two shots are what i have.
The sole resident of this setup now is a turqouise butterfly SD. it'll soon make way for a school of rasboras or perhaps danios or even hatchets.
PS: A personal thanks to Jiesheng for these amazing narrow leave java ferns.
Regards,
Phillip.
Here's my louya setup:
Dimensions: 23cm Cube
Lights: 12w Halogen from Ikea
Filtration: small internal filter
CO2 injection: Nil
Substrate: Fine Gravel No Base Fert
Parameters: not measured
Fertilisation: Dr malicks lushgrow aqua & micro, once in a while.
Water change: 50% Weekly
Water temp: Not Measured
Plants: Java Moss, Singapore Moss, Echinodorus Tenellus, Anubias sp. 'Nana', Hygrophila Difformis (Wisteria/Water Sprite)
Bioload: 1 bristlenose fry, 3 Blue Cochu Tetras just for kicks.
* Side Note: Setup this tank for experiments in photography rather than aquascaping*
Philip: Good idea of using suckers to hold the twigs! The twigs don't look like driftwood. Will they rot over time? Keep us updated.
Jerome: Nice tank! Why not do with less frequent water change? Because I think the nutrients from the fish will be removed with it.
BTW - want to learn from you too how you took the photo. Do you use flash to brighten up the back or top?

With such a strong Halgen over it, if i don't change water everyweek i'll start to have green dust on my glass. Do you think i should stop?Originally Posted by juggler
Photo? Erm.. heh heh. Lights, Hairdryer and more lights! No flash used, just use an external light source.
I actually casted my tank's yellowish haogen on the back surface whilst throwing a 2x36w at full blast over, at an angle to get nice lighting and contrast.
msg me thru msn if you want more details.
Its java moss in the background. No base fert or soil used, just gravel.Originally Posted by juggler
