Thanks!
No fertilisers. Only peat under the Onyx gravel and lots of fish food for my fishes.

Hi KF,
Your master touch never fail to impress me.
I'm thinking of something similar for my 2 ft tank ... the windelov hill ... with crypts on the right. The hill is mainly to cover the internal filter on the left. Where can I get a large amount of loose ferns so that i can them to a chosen piece of driftwood ?
I'm using 36w + 18 w. Is it too strong for a low-tech tank ? I'm having green thread algae at the moment and those ferns and anubias under the shade of savinnia which you gave me seem to do much better. I'm experimenting now with turning the 18w FL light off and just using the PL 36 w.
Thks.

you can call teo to ask if they have enough loosen java fern for you. you need to balance your fertilisation regime with your light source
Hi Peter,
for a low maintance tank and for the farn, nanas and cryptos the single 18W FL would be enough. 36W is a lot of light for these plants and without the right amount of CO2 and fertilisers you will get algae again. Less light means less photosynthesis, so less nutrients are necessary but the plants also grow slowlier. But it's enough for these plants. I kept these plants in my 2' tank for several years with a single 15W FL and only small amounts of liquid fertiliser.
regards
Robert
Hi Peter,
I think 18W could be sufficient.
If you want to use 36W over the 2ft tank, you may like to continue having some floating plants over them for shade. My low-tech 2ft/ 36W Xmas Moss tank did better with Salvinias floating over them. The floating plants also serves to removes excess nutrients.
Cheers!

Thks folks for all the advice. I've been using 36+18 = 54w for my supposedly low-tech aquarium and have been plaqued with green hair algae. Even hornwort was overwhelmed by the green hair algae. Didn't occur to me that 54w is too much until I saw some of the beautiful low-tech tanks here and realise so little light is needed. I'm now switching to 36w only with savinnia and observe how this goes and if necessary bring it down to 18w only. Had all along thought that the green hair algae problem is due to fertiliser tabs leaking into the water column and not too much light with too little fast growing plants.
Thks again folks.
Cheers,
Peter

go easy with the fertilization since its a low light tank, as for the hair algae problem, you might want to either remove as much as you can manually or you can get some algae eaters to help u along
