thanks for the comments guys. will take note of the lighting problem. shutter speed is ISO100... guess i will have to increase it next time. another reason for the low light is lots of riccia is shading the tank from light above and i can't retie them to the driftwood in the tank cos the dwarf cichlid (3rd pic) spawned. don't wanna disturb them too much.

kelstorm: yup, that's the pleco. the common brown one.

DEA: the yamato is about 1.5".

Shutter speed is not ISO. Shutter speed means you increase the length of time the shutter is opened each time you take a photo. For digital cameras, a typical range is from 1/1000 sec to 1 sec. Better cameras might have up to 16 secs. Try to increase the shutter speed to get a better exposure (brighter).
ISO settings increase the gain of the ccd. i.e ISO200 provides more gain than ISO100. The results is that the photo appears brighter but it is recommended to adjust shutter speed to get a proper exposure rather than adjust ISO beacause when the gain of the ccd is increased, the distortions will be amplified as well.

if you intend to use shutter speeds slower than 1/30 you should go get a tripod
otherwise it's very difficult to get non-blurred shots
even for 1/4s exposure, a small twitch in your hand can ruin the shot
