I've given up trying to catch the fries in the breeding tank, so have left the new incoming fries to Darwinian theory. So far, I've found 3 new fries in the tank today and no stressed out moms who look like their desperately trying to escape the breeding tank.

Try keeping more plants in the tank, this will help more fry to survive

    Guppendler and other experts

I have a question for you. I have a juve guppy female (10 wks or more) that looked like it was going to give birth, getting very fat in the belly, and then all of a sudden it dies. I've had 2 deaths in 2 days (one is the juve, and the other is an adult female). The hang at the bottom like they're super tired, and then if disturbed, they swim super fast to go somewhere else, and then they settle at the bottom of the tank again.

I have a small canister filter, and air pump plus a UV filter to keep the water as algae free as possible. I don't do quantitative measurement of the water condition, but the rest of the fishes still look ok, include little fries in their baby pen area. So that has led me to deduce that it could be an issue with these individuals.

    Any thoughts?

Likely to have suffered from Bloat. Do you do partial water change weekly?

    Re: Guppy babies

I do weekly water change and I also stir up the sediment to get sucked into the filter every couple days. I also top up the water to compensate for evaporation.

I do a more thorough clean about 1x per 2 weeks.

The water is slightly brackish as I add a bit of sea salt solution to the water.

    Re: Guppy babies

Hmm I am a bit worried now. I've had 4 fatalities in the last 3 days. Started w an adult, then the juvenile (bloated), then this morning I found a male, and tonight I found a female adult.

My tetra and white cloud and sword tail still happy happy as what I can see?

Do I need to be more aggressive in changing water? Do I need antibiotics?

Fyi I just cleaned the tank and the filter this past weekend, and changed in new filter wool and added filter that combat the effects of nitrite and ammonia.

    Re: Guppy babies

The fat belly described by you is indicative of bloat or also called dropsy. Over stressed fish can developed dropsy. Dropsy can also be caused by bacterial infections, parasites or liver problems. Goldfish and guppy are pretty susceptible to dropsy. If caught early, treatment with gypsum salt may help remove the fluid/gas built up in the belly. But cured fish are prone to relapse. Do you feed your fish primarily with live tubifex worms only?

How to fix dropsy? Some say Epsom salt, and some say antibiotics

    Re: Guppy babies

I just bought a bottle of OF internal bacteria medication and treating the tank.

Took out the carbon in my canister and turned off the Uv light.

2nd dosage in 4 days. Wish me luck. I am seeing perhaps a few sick ones.

Tempted to buy more females but thought I'd let this phase pass first before I inadvertently kill off the new batch as well.

    Keep you all updated.

    Re: Guppy babies

Many guppies sold in lfs are unfed, over crowded and in poor health. This could lead to dropsy.

From your account, if so many guppies are afflicted by dropsy in the same instance, the infection could be of bacterial nature. The OF medicine may help, good luck and please keep us posted

Dropsy is not just bloated tummies, you can see the scales sticking up like porcupines too.

    Re: Guppy babies

Yea, sad to say when their scales stick out like pineapple, i would say it's gone case. I have never experience dropsy from guppies but i have experienced it with bettas. I tried so many preventives measures and cures but none seem to work.

    Re: Guppy babies

Dropsy may or may not have the manifestation of the scale protrusion, in most cases it will when the belly gotten too big. That's why dropsy is also known as the "pine cone" disease.

I am keeping an eye out for this one. Not sure if it will last although the belly is not bloated. uploadfromtaptalk1410442539759.jpg
