Experts, my mommy guppy just popped 2 babies. This normal? Or should I expect more.

Can I release the mom for confinement so that I can clean the baby tank?

Pls so give me your advise thank you.

Expect more dude. Don't release, wait for a day for it to fully release the babies. Try to use small tube to siphon out the dirt.

Waited a day, mommy ate one of the babies. Released to general population. Now nursing the single baby and wait for the others to pop

Hi klo44w, what i did was throwing in some hornswort (a type of floating plant) for the babies to hide. It covered around 70% of surface area and my babies now are too big for mama's mouth.

Hi Kraken, thks for the advise.

Another question is why the males tend to be more fragile than females? I've lost 3 males in the past 4 to 6 weeks, whereas the 4 females still gg strong.

My ratio is 4 to 1. I wonder if the male is being overworked?

    Re: Guppy babies

I seem to have females dying. 1 died 2 weeks back, and another one seems to be about to go the same way.

I read on another post to add aquarium salt, but will it make my neon tetra and white clouds go belly up?

    Re: Guppy babies

I think my tank stabilised. I added 2 males and 4 females to replenish those that went up to guppy heaven. Now have 6 fries in my holding tank.

One of the males more active than the other.

    Re: Guppy babies

Guppies are pretty easy to keep and breed. If the females are isolated just before giving birth, you should be able to recover more babies provided there's enough hiding place provided. And before long you will have too many guppies to keep : ) Have fun!

    Re: Guppy babies

Thks. What I find challenging is to figure out which ones are abt to pop. I accidently discovered the fries one day when I was cleaning the tank and sucked up a few of them. Lucky they survived the impeller.

    Re: Guppy babies

Just look at the belly of the females. When the belly is full and round it's time to isolate the female. The female will give birth every 4 weeks or so after the last drop.

    Re: Guppy babies

I say the HB female from the 1st pic will drop fry first as it is more gravid. Should happen within a week. Good luck!

    Re: Guppy babies

Yes she did but I think I killed the fries accidentally as I didn't realize the fries had dropped. But another female dropped one last night and I found another in the main tank.

So I've released 3 of the bigger fries and still have abt 5 in the nursery.

    Thks for asking.

Next is what to do when there's too many?

    Re: Guppy babies

The females are pretty huge the drop should have at least 20-30 fry easily. Best isolate the fry if you want them to do well. Week old fry can still be eaten up by the adults. And fry are too small to eat adult food. If there's too many it's actually not really a bad problem. It just indicates that you are doing a good job in keeping guppy. When you have too many guppy, you could give them away or exchange them in the forum and make new friends perhaps. Happy guppying!

    Re: Guppy babies

The female guppy is usually isolated in the nursery tank when it is going to drop fry soon like a few days. Think you had isolated your females way too early hence the mess. In order not too stressed the isolated females too much, you can use an air pump tube to siphon out the detritus
