    Hi everyone!

I'm sure you guys have come across the bulbs above. I'm just wondering in terms of the watts supplied by each bulb to a planted tank.

For example, if you purchase a 7w bulb, the output is similar to a 40w bulb. Do you calculate watts per litre using 7 or 40? It will lead to a big difference if you use either number.
Also, the eventual algae boom will definitely be a concern!

Just hope to get some answers to my questions. Thanks!

None. Watts/liter or watt per gallon does not really mean anything. Different light have different spectrum. It also does not work on big tank and nano tank. The best to measure light for plants is by using PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) meter which basically measure the amount of light used for photosynthesis.

I've used those LED lights before in my lamps, its light spread is similar to a normal PL for CFL bulb (i guess that's what they are designed to replace). For usage with an aquarium, you'll probably need to use it in a lamp casing with reflectors inside to focus the light, like those adjustable table top study lamps.

As for wattage, i guess you could use the 7W rating as a form of reference for power... though like what Shadow mentioned its not really a reliable way to calculate actual effectiveness in a tank (don't use the 40W rating, that is just based on olden times filament bulbs, its mainly for marketing purposes). Do check the spectrum of the lights though, ideally should be 6,500k and above (with more blue and red, less green wavelength) for planted tanks.

true , watt per gallon doesnt work now for leds , also different led have different spec , more of a trial and error testing

Do I need a PAR meter to measure this? I have this DIY idea of using this to direct the light towards my nano tank. Probably will have to line the inner with reflective material.

You could consider getting an adjustable desk lamp which fits E27 bulbs from IKEA... only S$14.90 and it'll direct the light and you can clamp it on the side of the table to secure it:

I used this method on a small tank at the office before and it works quite well.
