Anybody have similar observation as mine?
Nobody?
The population explosion of snails in my tank when algae was flourishing had just as suddenly died down when the alga are kept in check. However, I don't mind having one or two of the snails around -- adds to the biodiversity of the tank.
Yesterday, I noticed that the remaining snails have white coloured (chalky looking) shells. Normally, I'd see these on the empty shells of dead snails which had been soaking in water for a while. I'm quite surprised to see this in living snails too. Is this due to some sort of deficiency?
I have some coral chips in the tank for GH, and my water has 6 degrees kH, and 11 degrees Gh can't really be called soft anymore.
pH of 6.5 couldn't be too acidic for the shells can it?
BTW, I even notice algae (BBA) growing on the shell of one of the snails
What gives?
Warm regards,
Lawrence Lee

yes.. I've seen this also. Haven't get any thought about it before or its connection with water Ph. Just recently I lowered the Ph to 6.5, trying to combat BBA, but I'm quite sure that I spotted the occurance prior to that. I'll take a closer look.
My snails also have that before.
It is found on those snails that survive after my co2 poisoning incident.
Land snails need alkalinic soil to mantain their shells.. so I dunno if the acidity can affect the shells of water snails too?

So, I surmise, that High CO2=Low pH, therefore acidity erodes the snail's shells. (here I guessing that chua's kh is of single digit figures)
Anyone have any other thoughts? I've just added an onion snail. It's got a nice looking shell. I'd certainly hate to see it ruined because of acidity.

Haha I'm just making a wild assumption/guess, don't take it for real! :P
