    was told that this is salvinia natans, but somehow not very convinced as it looks different from pictures provided in google.

    That's what i would also ID as salvinia natans too... i guess some of the photos online may be mis-labelled, or a related species, or they are showing another form under different light conditions or growth stage (under sufficient lighting, they usually grow densely and crowd together in bunches, hence look like the ones in your photos).

    Your google skill not high enough.
    try researching 1 hour, just browsing sample pictures.

    When in doubt, keep it for sometime... the way farms keep it may defer from how we do ... as in the lighting quality.

    saw similar leaf pattern on google, salvinia cuculatta, but theres no leaf measurements to compare. another one is salvinia molesta (i like that name!) , but its usually found in rivers or lakes
