I need to get a suitable canister filter for my 5 ft tank. The current Ehiem 2217 I am using is not very effective.
Thinking of constructing the inlet and outlet tubes using PVC pipes, controlled by water valves. Has anyone done this?
    Please advise.

calculate the water volume of your tank.
get a filter that has a flow rate of about 3 times your tank volume.

you can use pvc pipes but do not that pvc is inflexible. so you'll need to spend some time designing your piping layout. and you'll still need some soft tubing for connection to the canister fiter. water valves are ok but only use the outlet valve to control flowrate.

I am in the process of designing the pvc pipes layout. I'm confident it can work but I still need a suitable canister filter.

I have seen the uncles at Bioplast (System Control LFS) making DIY filters using PVC pipes/tubing and large capacity (up to 2,400 l/h) Eheim pumps, which they sell for 5ft or larger tanks. Maybe you can go and have a look??
