hi guys! need advise on what to do> i am going to clear my plant in the tank to keep riccia, problem is do i need to clear the gravel also? cos the gravel consist of 2" base fert and 3" gravel. if i pulls out all the plants, think the fert will also leech out. i can let them settle down then do riccia but will the water be over fertalised? or is it advisible to change the base also? i will not be keeping any root plant in the new set up. pls advise.

Remove all the livestock first.... put in a temp tank. Uproot and remove everything, can still keep the gravel.

Once tank is bare will only gravel+base fert+water, drain almost all the water away.... This will remove almost all of the "leaked" fert. If still worried, fill up and drain the water again.

Then place your riccia on top of the gravel, monitor for a day and take water parameters, place back fish.

Riccia look "nice" with those pearls of "bubbles".... BUT once pieces of it starts of come or grow out, you have one heck of a time to clear them .

What i will do is that i will remove all the plants with as little disturbance as possible so as to minimize the amount of leakage. Then do at least a 50% water change.

Then i will put it the riccia lawn immediately after the water change. This will allow it to absorb any nutrients that leak out during the process. Remember to keep the CO2 level above 20ppm.

By the way is there any bioload in your present tank?
