A bit bare... but a good start. Must plant heavily at the beginning...

Some suggestions for mid-size plants in the empty spaces:
    - A. reineckii
    - Lobelia cardinalis
    - Blyxa japonica
    - E. quadricostatus
    - E. latifolius
    - E. schlueteri (a mid-size sword plant)
    - Crypts species

Can also try rocks and driftwood to create some focus point.

    Cheers!

If you are trying to get plants from LFSs that can't afford you the luxury of refering to / ordering from Oriental's Aquarium Plant Handbook, try bringing some photos along.

The gallery on this website is a good place to start for some of the more common plants (Blyxa japonica, Lobelia cardinalis)

Btw, what's the plant on the right? Hope it's not some kind of Microsorium pteropus (Java fern) cos their rhizomes should not be buried in substrate.

    nice start there....
My advise, visits the LFS, buy the plants that looks soothing to your eyes...
Anyway...u started off with your choice of fish in mind or plants in mind?
As u progress, u will start to know some of the characterist of plants as well as what plants matches the fishes. eg. moss goes with shrimps...etc

The reason why your friend's java fern is producing plantlets this way (and I expect quite a large number produced) is because plant is dying.

The most common way to plant java fern is to tie the plant to an object (e.g. driftwood). If you wish to plant it to the substrate, the rhizome should not be covered.

Is the rhizome the thick and hard thing below the leaves which connects them together?

Referring to me ah? My java ferns's rhizomes are just above the soil only, I left them tied on driftwood and bury the driftwood. Some I left them loose in the water.
