Yes, axolotls do that as well! But the water must be really clean and fed really well.
I just realise that one of my newts was attacked by the other newt and the front left limb was totally torn off and you can literally see the bone sticking out. I have now separated the both of other and hopefully that they will not fight again. I hope that the injured newt can grow back its front leg - apparently according to Internet - it takes 10 weeks. So I hope that I will post the pictures of this remarkable recovery and hope that the injured newt will live to show us the recovery process.

2nd week of injury
From what i know young axolotls will nip each other and they have cannibalistic tendencies.
Where did you buy them?
This was from a fellow forum member - had this for about 2 years already then mix with another species of newt then got bitten and now they are in separate compartments. Will continue to post pictures soon - this week the "thigh bone" has dropped off and now there is a stump growing - hopefully the leg will grow back soon.
oh wow is that a Chinese Fire Belly? Ive been looking all over for it!! Anw I've got the same problem with my Paddletail Newt too.. one of them have gotten his front feet bitten off.. hopefully it will grow back
I think this one is a Japanese Fire Belly - this species is very gentle and very quiet - unlike the paddletails which are rather territorial.
I doubt the japanese version are able to reach our country and surviving the journey. I believe they require a lower temperature than their chinese counterpart. Seen a documentary or two on their habitat, not an expert. When will AVA gives the green light to keep these creatures?
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.

Very impressive
What fantastic regenerative powers the newt has! I learnt something today.
