Peat swamps, esp those in the tropics, are possibly the most interesting and complex habitats for aquarists and scientists alike, being hostile environments that yet harbour a bewildering wealth of biodiversity, from tiny Boraras, wine bettas and parosphromenous, languid cryptocorynes and a myriad of other creatures both above and below water. Unfortunately, as is the case of many other habitats, their true worth and value for human welfare (among them flood control and water table buffers) will probably only be realised when they are mostly gone.... that's the tyranny of short-term profits for you....
