Yeah, the size of the tank and layout are important factors too, If the fishes are kept constantly in close proximity of each other and there isn't much space for fishes to swim away to hide, there would tend to be alot more biting and fin nipping occuring between the fishes.

If you are keen to keep and breed livebearers, it'll be best to get a larger tank (ie. 2ft/64L tank will support a good sized colony of them), much easier to keep the water conditions stable. These fishes aren't small livestock with low bio-loads like boraras or shrimps... swordtails and have comparatively much larger body mass and size (and hence higher bio-loads), and when they start reproducing the population will very quickly overload a small tank.

Yes, possible. In fact, this is more likely than male swordtail mating with female platy cos the latter might be too small for the larger male sword. The smaller platy male could get close to the larger female sword fairly easily.

The fish is definitely a female platy. she looks pregnant...due to deliver soon Platies will mate with Swordtails and this has happened to me before. The end product were orange swordtails;D

And a general rule for fish aggression is size. If your platy and swordtail is roughly same size... cannot fit into the fish mouth, the fish will probably be fine together

And keep more females than males, this would help reduce some aggressions among the males to certain extend. Best is keep only one single male

Re: any idea what fish is this?

Actually, mollies can't cross-breed with platies and swordtails at all. They're too distantly related to produce offspring.

Here's an overview of what we know about livebearer hybridisation (among the species commonly kept in aquariums)

    Xiphophorus

    Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii)
    Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)
    Variable Platy (Xiphophorus variatus)

All the 'swordtails' and 'platies' you see in the trade are most likely of hybrid origin, having both platy species, or swordtail crossed with platy, or even all 3 species in their ancestry.

    Poecilia

    Sailfin Molly (Poecilia latipinna)
Yucatan or Giant Sailfin Molly (Poecilia velifera)
Mexican or Shortfin Molly (Poecilia mexicana)
Shortfin or Green Molly (Poecilia sphenops)

Similarly, most of the mollies in the trade are likely to be any combination of hybrids between the 4 species of molly.

    Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)
    Endler's Livebearer (Poecilia wingei)

Many of the colour forms of Endler's Livebearer in the trade are the result of hybridisation with Guppies.

So to summarise, platies can hybridise with swordtail, all the mollies can breed with each other, guppies and Endler's livebearer can produce fertile young. However, they cannot hybridise with others outside the group. In other words, platies and swordtails cannot hybridise with mollies and guppies. In theory, mollies can be bred with guppies, but this rarely occurs due to some unknown reason.
    Small is beautiful.

It's a red molly. Very common in our local fish shops.
