Anyone knows of the existence of the above. To what I know, only experimental at this stage.

Any colormetric test can use a spectrophotometer.
So you mix some reagents in the test blank, plop this into the spect and read out the concentration.

You make some known standard solutions say 0.5, 1-2-5-10-20-30ppm etc and make a wavelength vs Absorbance graph.

From there you can plot very accurately the levels in your tank.

They do make NO3 probes and also PO4 probes, these run 300-400$ or more each and can be used on mosy ion based meters for digital real time out put.

    Both fairly pricy options.

    Lamotte SMART 2

Has anyone tried the SMART 2 yet? Am willing to give this electronic measurements a shot. My intention is to build one that is similar to the automatic pH controller that releases CO2 when needed. Hence this SMART 2 or other equipment should allow automatic phosphate and nitrate feeding to the tank. At least this imortant parameter is kept constant.

    Any comments?

SMART 2 is a colorimeter. It is an off-line type of testing. It basically is the same as your test kits now, except that you use the machine to compare the colour instead of using your eyes.

It is not suitable for the application you mentioned.

    nitrate ion selective electrode

I found this while surfing the web. Not sure if this is what Tom Barr was referring to.
