I understand from some fish shops that these females are kept virgin so that their energy is channel for growth rather than making fry. Another explanation is these guppies carry "gigantic" genes that led to their huge size.
I believe in the latter as I had a female that was growing normally until one day it starts to grow a gonopodium. It then transformed into a male guppy with delta tail but it continues to grow till it's like twice the size of a normal male. I still have this giant male with me, will take pic and post soon. Based on this observation, I really think there must be a 'giant' gene at work. Most of the giant guppy sold at lfs are female and not male.
So would it be possible to breed this giant male with another giant female and end up getting offpsrings that will grow in giants??
In theory it is plausible. However, I've not seen this 'transformed' male mated with any female. Not sure if it is infertile or it is too slow to chase normal females. If you are interested I am willing to give you this giant male free.
Wow Guppyendler! I have learnt something new today! Yea often i see a 3 inch female guppy at c328, i have always tot they were like very very old, so grew till that size. haha
Hi Guppendler,
Thanks for your kind offer. I am more interested in keeping endlers now
Can you imagine if bettas and guppies cross breed? The bettas would mate with the guppies first then eat them later. Machiam the Black Widow Spider.
That would not happen as betta and guppy are too different to cross. One is an egg layer the other one a live bearer. Betta would have attack the guppy and kill it before anything happen
