Then you notice that the eggs are actually moving, kind of rolling by themselves.
And they seem to be very aware of the surroundings, and it's almost as if they are looking around. you can clearly see the eye of the fry.
Cheers,
Hi guys,
Happened to see the killifish eggs hatching at Azmi's place (Eco Culture) and I took a few photos to share with you guys.
At first, the was the eggs. They are really tiny, about 1 to 2 mm in size.
Cheers,

Upon closer inspection, you can see the the fry are fully formed, but curled up inside the egg.
At this point, the movement becomes more pronounced, almost like a twitching ball. It's actually the fry struggling to break out of the shells.
Sorry about the bits of moss here and there, but it also give you an indicated of the size.

Success at last! The fry garners enough energy to straighten itself and in the process breaks free of it's organic confines with it's tail.
However, it's still enveloped by the shell and seems disoriented after being curled up for so long.

After staying motionless for a few seconds, it continues to struggle and straighten itself further. At the same time, it was also trying to disengaged itself from the shell.
In the meantime, some of the other fry already have a head start and has swam free.

The shell was finally disengaged from the body after much twitching around.
The body of the fry is still fairly translucent at this point and you can almost see all of it's organs under the microscope. The caudal fins are clearly developed as well as the pectoral fins.

Within seconds, the fry achieves it's orientation and was soon swiming out of sight ....leaving behind an empty shell and it's siblings to catch up.

And here is the final picture of the free swiming fry!! (Note that the dosal fins is not yet formed)
The whole process took about 15 minutes for the whole lot of eggs and it was certainly a special moment when you can witness it up close and personal.
Thanks Azmi!
Hope it was interesting for the rest of you guys.

Just found something else of interest.
The little round thing beside the egg on the left is actually what a daphnia looks like.

Benny,
Wonderful pictures you took! Maybe you would like to post them at the killi forum to be awed by the killinuts there as well? BTW, gardneri is spelt with a single 'i'.
Turaco.
Well done, Benny. That's much more than anyone can ever hope to see (without the proper equipment).
Viewing hatching eggs under the scope and actually capturing that 'Kodak moment' is a different experience altogether. Thanks for sharing the beautiful pics!
BTW, Benny, I thought you might like to know that the Fp GAR 'Lokoja' isn't established locally and these fry are the 1st available batch in a LFS.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,

Couldn't reply earlier as I was out for the whole of last week.
turaco, looks like budak has kindly linked the photos in the killies forums already and there isn't much interest in this fish anyway. Thanks for correcting the spelling.

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
