Do you face problems with eggs laying all over the tank?

I think it's nerite snail, if I not wrong, they do eat plants.. which may not be a good algae solutions in due time.

Haven't notice any eggs yet. I have these in 3 tanks of mine, haven't notice any plant damage yet. I guess they are still busy with the algae?

Re: Nature Algae Clean Up Crew

i keep them as well. they dont eat any plant that i have unless decay plant. average adult is about 5 cent coin size.

in my tank i only keep 2 of them and they still mate! I just wonder if they can toggle their gender whenever there are 2 of them...

be prepared for white eggs mainly on tank glass. they wont hatch just that you need to spot it and remove it.

Re: Nature Algae Clean Up Crew

really? can someone confirm that as i actually own 5 of them.. which i kept in my shrimp and snail tank..

if they don't do any damage to plants, i probably will relocate them.

just to reconfirm that we are on the same page:

Re: Nature Algae Clean Up Crew

Nerite snails will not eat healthy live plants, only algae or dead/dying plants.

Only thing is if conditions are good for them, high chance they will eventually lay lots of white eggs everywhere (which wouldn't hatch in freshwater, but just looks unsightly), so you'll need to use a scraper to remove the eggs... unless you're super lucky and happen that all your nerite snails are male.

Nerite Snails have specific genders and cannot switch... the males will not lay any eggs, but the females will still lay unfertilized eggs even without the presence of any males. Hence as long as you have female nerite snails in a tank, they will lay the white eggs.

Could be mating.. or just cleaning algae on each other's shells.

Some people use this observation to help narrow down which could be male and which could be female... presumably the one on top is male. Not 100% confirmed though.

Usually when i see this, i usually separate the "male" one to another tank or use a fine tip permanent marker to place a small dot on the shell, help to keep track of it for further ID.

Yeah... snail shells are actually a good place for algae to grow on, its kinda like hardscape and always exposed to light.

Snail shells do need to be cleaned by other snails or algae eaters from time to time, otherwise you'll start getting snails with "don king" hairstyles crawling about...

    Looks cool though.
