If you add in the smaller shrimp species like cherry shrimps, crystal red shrimps or malayan shrimps, high chance they will get eaten. Unless you also consider the shrimps as live food for your fishes too (i know of some people who do that).

Larger sized shrimps like amano/yamato shrimps would have much less chance of getting eaten (they grow up to 5-6cm in size, hence too large to be swallowed whole by the live bearers)... though if the fishes are hungry enough, they could harass and attack those larger shrimps, biting off their legs and eating them alive piece by piece, i've seen that happen once before.

With that in mind, it'll be best to just buy cheap shrimps (like those bulk bags of 50 cherry/malayan shrimps for $10), they do the same jobs and it'll be alot less wallet-pain when they get eaten, consider the shrimps as clean up crew and part-time live food... if they get eaten, just buy more to replenish the crew.

Don't worry... 50 cherry shrimps is actually not much in a 2ft tank, considering they would gradually get eaten up over time anyways, at least you'll still have remaining survivors to help clean up the tank.

then find yamato.. or nerite snails.

i actually have yamato, but i feel they are not doing a good job..
my tank has a betta, so far, peaceful and harmony with the yamato.

the real cleaners in my tank, are the oto and nerite snails.

nerite snails don't reproduce in the freshwater aquarium because they are brackish (low salt) water species. They are able to survive and tolerate freshwater but not comfortable enough to reproduce. this is why they're a favourite clean up crew!

Nerite snails still do lay eggs in freshwater tanks, just that the eggs don't hatch as they need brackish conditions to do so. Usually once the nerite snails get enough algae to eat, adapt well to the tank conditions and become old/large enough, they will start laying eggs all over the place.

Its very common to see freshwater tanks with nerite snails and all the hardscape covered in white eggs that look like sesame seeds.

Nerite snail eggs? I've not seen any fishes that are able to eat them... the white nerite snail eggs are so hard that you literally need to use a razor scraper to remove them from objects!

yup, when they start laying eggs your rocks,Dw and tank glass are screwed...
It will take a lot of effort scraping them off.

That being said, nerite snails have separate male and female genders, so if you are lucky, like what kurty mentioned earlier, there is a chance you may have male nerite snails only, and those will not lay any eggs at all.

Male nerite snails are the best... great algae eaters and no unsightly eggs.

Unfortunately its almost impossible to differentiate their gender, so you just have to take a chance and add them to the tank. If after a few months the nerite snails still don't lay any eggs, then very likely you are super lucky and only have males.

Well, snails don't actually eat fish poop, but they may eat the undigested food bits inside the poop, which helps further breakdown and process it. The snails themselves also do poop too, so they still add to the overall tank bio-load.
