    Setting up a Sulawesi tank

    As promised......

Here is my new 2ft Sulawesi tank setup process for reference.

    I use Sulawesi Minerals 8.5

    1.jpg

A measuring spoon is enclosed in the container. A slightly heaped measuring spoon (around 3 g) to every 20 liters of water used.

    2.jpg

I used this Life brand water from NTUC. For a 2ft tank you need around 33 bottles of 1.5 liters. This makes up to 2.5 spoons of Sulawesi minerals 8.5

    3.jpg

I've added these directly into the tank and add a air filter to the tank to let the minerals mixed with the water thoroughly.

    5.jpg

This is the only filter that I'll be using to keep the tank going in future.

Let the water settle down in the next 2-5 days and than I started to add in the river sand. A thin layer will do the trick.

I also add in some drift wood and volcano gardening rocks bought from nursery.

    4.jpg

I will immerse the rocks in fresh tap water for at least 2 weeks to clear out and contaminates from the rock and change the water every 3 days before introducing it to the tank.

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

On Day 6, I'll add in the Sulawesi snails into the tank.

    6.jpg

Thereafter, I'll let the tank run for another 1 week with the snails in the tank without feeding them.

Yesterday, (Day 14) I started to add in 3 Sulawesi shrimps into the tank and if there is no casualty, I'll start to introduce the second batch into the tank.

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

The Sulawesi shrimp might not be wipe out immediately if the water parameter does not suit them and this is usually why a lot of hobbyists think they had get everything right.

You need to ensure that the shrimps survive for at least a month and can see growth on the shrimp or berried. Then only you can assume that your setup is more or less successful.

Do note that the tank parameters that suit a specie does not means all species will be able to survive. I had being working on the Sulawesi Cardinal with high success. So I'm looking for other breed to venture into with this new 2 ft setup.

Sadly, it's hard to find them in our local LFS nowadays....

Do you use CO2 to help the Sulawesi 8.5 salt dissolve (as per instructions)?
Or just mix with the NTUC water directly?

From my experience, it does not dissolve so easily.

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

Sulawesi 8.5 minerals are harder to dissolve in water. There is this Sulawesi 7.5 minerals which can easily dissolve

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

I failed with Sulawesi, but at that time, they didn't have the Sulawesi mineral stuffs.
The only thing that suits Sulawesi best is our weather. The rest I couldn't keep up with their ideal water conditions.

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

I agree that it does not dissolve easily. For my instance, I just use an air pump to speed up the process without CO2 as I do not know injecting CO2 would have any impact on the water parameter.

For mature tank top up, I mix the water with a container and pour into the tank after mixing as it will clear off very quickly in the tank.

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

Co2 lowers ph - more acidic which helps the salts dissolve. I then use an air stone to drive out the co2. Water parameters (ph/TDS) after that is exactly as per packaging.

It works but it's so troublesome.

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

No. The snail were placed into the tank and this will help to cycle the tank as the snail poo will aid the buildup of the bacteria decomposing process.

Its perfectly fine to add additional bacteria during cycling to speed up the process.

And its also perfectly fine to add it (smaller amount) after cycling to maintain a healthy state of beneficial bacteria.

Here is a reference from a popular brand. http://www.prodibio.com/bacteria-tan...cal-filtration

Re: Setting up a Sulawesi tank

Based on my knowledge, we do not add bacteria when doing water change. This is just to start off the bacteria colony for newly setup tank.

what food did you feed your Sulawesi shrimp? Thanks.
My greatest interest in fish hobby is to breed them.
