    first of all,

WOW dude that is an amazing piece of rock/root there.

secondly, I experience the same "problem". they're just under that single layer of substrate right? don't worry they will emerge sooner or later

correct, as what gavan mentioned, just a matter of time before they emerge out which is a good sign.

about trimming, what I found was, once you have a stalk that creeps long enough and has mature, firm roots, you can snip it somewhere in the middle and just leave both sections rooted. then they will sprout on both sides

Yup. that is a nice piece of rock (very heavy), got it from 40 Jalan Lekar.

they are just below a single layer of the substrate. thought of siphoning the top layer of the substrate to expose them.

Do monte carlo grow very slow? i have setup the tank since end of sept. (co2 injected tank)

I feel that they grew slower than expected. Mine took about close to two months as well. possibly because the spread in single stalks, rarely branching. Therefore I decided to try snipping the mature stalks. what light are you using?

Like what Gavan said, trimming it would induce it to branch. Plant those cuttings into the soil & it would take root.

Mine grew the same way. It started crawling at the bottom of the substrate and are now slowly popping above it. I haven't trimmed the clump at the middle so I guess it's a good time to do that.
It's slow growing for me as well. That clump in the picture has been planted there since first week of october. I'm fine with them growing slowly though. they seem to be a very stable plant anyways. No algae or decaying issue whatsoever.

My tank runs at 30-32C without issue on the plant.
It can grow without CO2 but will be very slow.
It can also grow with low light but will compact and grew more upwards.
But it needs fertilizers to thrive. What do you dose for it?
